Carbon atomic chains possess extreme physical properties

Zhang et al recently predicted that carbon atomic chains with infinite length structure, named as polyyne and cumulene, as a new kind of carbon nanomaterial, possess extreme physics properties from calculation by using the First Principle Theory. Polyyne possesses an extreme Young’s modulus up to 1.304TPa with the most light mass density of 1.28 g/cm3 at greater mobility of the matter. While, cumulene has a direct bandgap semiconductor property of 1.859eV and the lighter mass density of 1.24 g/cm3. By comparing with single walled carbon nanotubes, graphite and diamond, the superiorities of the physical properties of carbon atomic chains were distinct without doubt. However, the structures of carbon atomic chains may not easy to be synthesized because it is in a unstable state by comparing the free energy.
