Preparation and Characterization of Er-doped ZnO Nanoparticles by Solid State Reaction Method

John’s group successfully synthesized Er-doped ZnO nanoparticles at different concentrations by solid state reaction method. Compared to the conventional methods, the solid-state reaction has advantage of its low cost, highyield, and ability to achieve high purity in making oxide nano powders. It is demonstrated that the XRD exhibit wurtzite crystal structure similar to the pure ZnO in 1 % Er3+ doped ZnO, However, the samples with Er3+ content>1 % reveals secondary phase. SEM images of 1 % Er3+ doped ZnO show the polycrystalline nature. UV-visible absorption spectrum of Er3+ doped ZnO nanocrystals shows a strong absorption peak at 388 nm. The PL study exhibits emission in the visible region. The magnetization- field curve of Er3+ doped ZnO nanocrystals showed ferromagnetic property at room-temperature.
